1 Corinthians 10.31 '…whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.'

I’m always very struck by the phrase “Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise” in the song ‘Blessed be Your name’. God blesses us with breath; every breath we breathe comes from Him. Therefore, we should return with thanksgiving and praise. If that’s the case, then all other things, seemingly larger things that frame the way we live and work, are put rather starkly into perspective.

All of our choices, actions and inactions should be for the praise, honour and glory of God. Sometimes saying no to something we know deep down is wrong will set us apart and please God. Our friends and colleagues who may not be Christians observe us and, very often, it is our actions and words used in every day life that often speak much louder than hard selling the Good News of the gospel.

The focus of our lives should be to put God at the centre and to glorify Him. If He is truly at the centre, then He should permeate every area of our lives - how we worship, eat, work, play, speak, spend our money and serve others. Today, let’s bless Him, honour Him and glorify Him in all we do. No doubt we will fall short, but surely this should be the desire of our hearts. Fix your eyes on Him!

I’m afraid I couldn’t slim down my playlist this week, so feel free to dip into some of these beautiful songs:

PROMISE

God's promises are everywhere. It's amazing to see how many promises are in the Bible and how they benefit us today.

Romans 8:28 NIV
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Hebrews 10:36 NIV
You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

These are just two verses that speak volumes on God's promises! We need to preserve, grow and listen to His callings. In our lives we can feel unsure or afraid of the next step but God promises He will be with us till the end of the age. That's so much time that we can't even calculate and that's for each of us, which is mind blowing.

I wanted to end with a song we all know. By faith, the chorus says "we will stand as children of the promise", this line makes me think that we are visual representations of God.

TESTS

I don't know about you, but I'm not the biggest fan of Tests. I am more of a practical person, but theory is something I've always not been the best at.

Tests come in all different ways: exams, car tests and I'm sure parents can relate to tests of patience!

It's fascinating how God works. Dad told me last Saturday that I would be doing the devotional, and, in my mind, I was thinking of Jonah. Then Sunday and Tuesday comes along and Steve and Peter Brind bring talks on the same subject.

In a lot of ways God tests us through our lives, to help build character and teach us many things about ourselves and God. That's what he did with Jonah, telling him to go to NNineveh. There are two ways to look at Jonah, the Jonah who ran away and the other who was faithful. I'd love to say I'm the latter but sometimes, the former can be appealing - but God is always with us and helps us the other side of our tests.

Another thing I found interesting is while God tests us, the Bible says that we shouldn't test God. That sounds crazy, but at the same time also makes sense. God knows best so why test him? I suppose we are human, and a visible sign is always helpful.

But god wants us all to grow and help each other and I feel these verses really help.

Psalms 139:23 NIV
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?

Romans 12:2 NIV
Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

To end this devotional, here's some songs that I feel really help during times of testing.

The first is “Faith” by Jordan Feliz. A lovely song all about having faith, and of course it's on Eleri's playlist.

The second, which is also on Eleri's list, is “Reckless Love / Even If”, which is by Mass Anthem. A great mashup of two songs.

Finally, a song from my own playlist, “Call My Name” by third day, which I hope you enjoy.
