Over the last few weeks I have been studying the life of David in 1 Samuel. David so bold and courageous, in the Lord's strength goes out to confront Goliath and slays him. But later in his story, Saul becomes jealous and self obsessed and tries to kill David. Suddenly David is overwhelmed with fear and panic and runs for his life. He seems to have forgotten God and all that He has done for Him and all is able to do in his sheer panic to get away, flee as far away as possible. He lies to the Priest Alimelek and runs into all kinds of problems in Gath because he hasn't consulted and looked to the Lord. Eventually he manages to escape and cries out to the Lord for forgiveness and restoration. Psalm 56 deals with this:
Psalm 56 v 3 & 4

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?

We too can become overwhelmed with fear and despair, run in every direction trying to resolve it, or indeed stand still just paralysed by the fear that has overtaken us. But we need to know that like David we can say these words, that 'in our God we will put our trust, we do not need to be afraid'. Why because He is with us and He has amazing plans for us.

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

1 Samuel Ch 17 v 45
David says to Goliath "you come against me with spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty".

I have always been in awe of the bible story of David and Goliath. I remember first hearing it as a child and trying to imagine being as brave and courageous as David. A shepherd boy facing a giant over nine feet tall, a fully armoured warrior that everyone was far too afraid to fight. Then David steps up armed only with a staff, a sling and five smooth stones. It looked like an impossible task, the odds were certainly stacked against him. But David had God on his side and I love that verse quoted above. Because David had amazing faith in god and knew the battle would be won because God was with him.

When we think back over this last year it's been really tough, we have all had giants to face and at times they looked impossible to defeat. But this story reminds us that our God is more then capable of defeating any giants we have in our lives, all we have to do is put our trust in Him and know that He is with us.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

Psalm 92.4 "For you make me glad by your deeds O Lord. I sing for joy at the works of your hands".

Yes, I do sing for joy at the works of God's hands, for not only are we promised eternal life in Him but we are continually blessed by the beauty of His creation and it never ever ceases to amaze me and remind me of just how great our God is. How can we not praise a God who surrounds us with so much beauty and majesty, from the tiniest, perfectly formed flower, to trees able to bend and withstand great storms, high mountain ranges and roaring seas? He changes the seasons and at the moment we are enjoying springtime and all the newness it brings. In time it will turn into summer with its long hot days, eventually cooling into autumn with its rich vibrant colours, then onto winter with its crisp frosts and pure white snow. Isn't our God amazing! His majesty, power, grace, provision and love surround us every single day. I was given a CD at Christmas, 'Blessings' by Aled Jones, the first song on it is, "How can I keep from singing". I can't, ...can you?

Psalm 100.2 "Worship the Lord with gladness, come before Him with joyful songs."
